Taking the Plunge: A Dive into the World of Cliff Jumping Richard Livsey, December 5, 2023January 30, 2024 Cliff jump of 10m @ Brixham, England Ah, cliff jumping, whether you’re an elite Red Bull athlete or just an everyday thrill-seeker, the allure of plummeting off a precipice into a beautiful natural high is so inviting for many around the world. So, grab your Speedos and join the plunge, as we dive into the world of cliff jumping. Leave the show-off stuff to the highly trained Since the inception of Red bull cliff diving, the sport/hobby has seen an exponential growth in popularity. Understandable really, watching the elites defy gravity with a serious amount of grace and finesse, people are going to want to replicate it! These folks practically live in mid-air, performing gravity-defying flips and twists that would make a gymnast blush. It’s like they basically told physics, “Do one, “I didn’t like you at school and nothing has changed!” Cliff jumping “elite” – Routines/Jumps Front 180 Degrees Barani: In this dive, the diver performs a forward-facing somersault with a half twist (180 degrees) while executing a forward spin. The term “barani” indicates the half twist. Pike Jump: A pike jump involves the diver jumping off the platform with straight legs and a tight, forward-bent body at the hips. The goal is to maintain a straight line while in the air. Tuck Jump: Tuck jumps involve the diver jumping and bringing their knees up toward their chest, while simultaneously holding their shins. The body is folded into a compact, tucked position. Somersault Back Front: In this dive, the diver performs a somersault first in a backward direction and then transitions into a somersault in a forward direction. It combines both backward and forward rotations. Straight Dive: A straight dive is a basic and fundamental dive where the diver maintains a straight body position throughout the dive. There are no twists or somersaults; it’s about achieving a clean, straight entry into the water. Inclusion – Sport for everyone We can’t all master the skills the elites have, but fear not, cliff jumping is a sport for everyone. From the casual weekend adventurer to the adrenaline junkie seeking the next fix, people around the world are exploring this underground sport. Forget pool diving – the real thrill comes from staring down the edge of a cliff, feeling completely at one with surroundings, and taking the leap of faith. 3 mates showing cliff jumping doesnt have to involve cliffs!!! Can cliff diving improve mental health? As we gear up for a cliff dive, the hormones associated with the fight or flight response come into play. In this heightened state, thinking about the past or the future becomes nearly impossible. The intense focus shifts entirely to the present moment, creating a grounded state of mind. Embracing this understanding, making the NOW the central focus of life becomes a powerful perspective: “Realise deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.” – Eckhart Tolle, The Power Of Now Now, let’s talk about that high – the intoxicating cocktail of endorphins and exhilaration that floods your system the moment you take the leap. The wind whistling past your ears, the brief moment of weightlessness, and then the explosive splash as you re-enter the embrace of the water below. It’s a symphony of sensory overload that leaves you buzzing with euphoria. Skilled and unskilled diving off a Quarry in Liskeard, England Safety first!! Easy does it……. Of course, with great thrills come great spills, and cliff jumping is pretty notorious, often referred to as Tombstoning! Sure, the water might look like a liquid pillow from the top, but misjudge your trajectory, and suddenly that serene water doesn’t have the same serenity. Red Bull divers make it look easy, but for the rest of us, there’s an art to conquering the fear and embracing the rush responsibly. Scouting the landing zone, checking water depth, and understanding the currents are all part of the cliff-jumping survival guide. Survival Guide Checklist; Get in water prior to jump! Check for obstacles (rocks) Check water depth Wear a wetsuit – FYI some videos show jumpers not following this guide – they’re either trained or foolish… do as I say, not as I do!!!! Assessing Jump “Kingy’s” Plymouth, England Is cliff jumping for me? In the end, whether you’re taking the plunge with the precision of a Red Bull athlete or just enjoying a leisurely descent into the unknown, cliff jumping is an experience that transcends the ordinary. It’s a celebration of human daring, a communion with nature, and a reminder that sometimes, the best way to escape gravity is to defy it – if only for a moment. So, put on your big boy pants (Speedos), take the leap, and with the waves of thrill…….ride the air and then the sea! Fitness
