While retaining some arcade elements, this instalment leans heavily towards golf simulation, possibly compromising the fun factor that defined its predecessors. Visually, EA Sports PGA Tour offers stunning graphics that makes you feel like you’re on the course. The lighting effects contribute to an immersive experience, casting long shadows as your rounds progress. However, the overall presentation lacks vibrancy, opting for a lifelike golf broadcast style, which, while functional, may leave some longing for the “arcade” feel of previous titles. The sound design is very well put together. I personally found the environmental noises and commentary, from actual Tour announcers, provided a nice touch. Despite occasional repetition, the overall quality remains positive. EA Sports’ create-a-player suite might not grab much attention, given its limited options, especially when coupled with the lacklustre Career Mode that focuses solely on events and advancement, lacking compelling storylines. One consistent criticism revolves around the control scheme, with an updated analog swing creating a noticeable disconnect for some players between their actions and the outcomes. Even with the introduction of a three-click arrangement, achieving a smooth shot feels challenging, raising concerns about responsiveness. Offline gameplay modes like Career Mode, Quick Play, and Match Play provide variety, but advertised features like “ShotLink Data” and “PureStrike” swings contribute minimally to the gameplay. The inclusion of the four Major Tournaments and the FedEx Cup stands out, offering a sports event feel to these prestigious events. Online, the game boasts a variety of modes and a decent matchmaking system, along with “Online Societies” and live events. However, the already-“laggy” swing becomes more frustrating online, detracting from the overall experience. Within sports gaming, EA has usually had the edge over competition…….anyone remember Pro Evolution Soccer? Now gamers have two major PGA titles to choose from . EA Sports PGA Tour offers authentic golf simulation with unmatched visuals, yet frustrating controls. Is this enough to prevent users flocking to the arguably more accessible PGA Tour 2K23?
