Apple i Phone 15 Richard Livsey, January 9, 2024January 22, 2024 Mobile Phone review RRP£799Screen Size6.1in Super Retina XDR (OLED) Processor Apple A16 Bionic – RAM 6GBStorage 128, 256 or 512GBWeight 171g The iPhone 15 comes packed with significant upgrades; an enhanced camera system, a faster chip, and the transition to USB-C. Despite a £50 reduction in the UK, bringing the price down to £799, is the upgrade worth the money? In terms of design, the iPhone 15 maintains the aluminium and glass composition, now featuring chamfered edges for a softer touch. Design is according to us at Man5hit still pretty decent! The screen, twice as bright as its predecessors, improves outdoor visibility. Nevertheless, it doesn’t incorporate the Pro models’ always-on display and faster refresh rate, which could be considered missed opportunities for a device in this price range. Under the hood, the iPhone 15 inherits the A16 Bionic chip from its predecessor, ensuring a responsive and snappy user experience. The battery life remains commendable, lasting up to 48 hours, a noteworthy achievement for a relatively compact smartphone in 2023. Charging the iPhone 15 takes approximately 110 minutes using a 20W or greater USB-C power adapter, which, unfortunately, is not included. This, considering the price of the phone, seems like being shortchanged somewhat. A significant departure is the adoption of the USB-C port, replacing the familiar Lightning cable. While this shift enhances compatibility with a variety of power adapters and USB-C cables, it’s crucial to note that the iPhone 15 operates at USB2.0 speeds, akin to its Lightning-equipped predecessors. Apple emphasises the battery’s longevity, designed to endure over 500 full-charge cycles with at least 80% of its original capacity. In its commitment to sustainability, the iPhone 15 incorporates recycled materials such as aluminium, cobalt, copper, gold, plastic, rare earth elements, tin, and tungsten. The company also offers trade-in and free recycling schemes, including options for non-Apple products. The camera system on the iPhone 15 features a dual-lens setup with an improved 48-megapixel main camera and a 12MP ultrawide lens, similar to the previous year’s model. The main camera defaults to capturing 24MP images, providing enhanced detail across various lighting conditions. Additionally, it can shoot full 48MP images, best suited for well-lit scenarios, and retains the 2x optical zoom from the previous year’s Pro models. One noteworthy advancement is the main photo mode’s ability to automatically capture depth information when detecting people or pets. This facilitates post-editing for creating portrait mode shots and allows for simultaneous use of night mode, resulting in improved low-light portraits. However, the absence of extended optical zoom remains a limitation for the standard iPhone 15, reserving such features for the Pro models with their advanced photography and videography capabilities. Despite this, the iPhone 15 captures aesthetically pleasing photos effortlessly. For users upgrading from older devices, the iPhone 15 marks a significant leap forward with its fast chip, extended battery life, vibrant display, and the versatile USB-C port. The influence from the Pro models, including the dynamic island and the improved 48MP main camera, adds a layer of interest. The iPhone 15 stands as a reliable and improved device, yet its allure may be somewhat diminished by the absence of certain exciting features, particularly when considering its price point. Users seeking a more captivating iPhone experience might find what they’re looking for in the iPhone 15 Pro. Man5hit still believe Apple have the edge over Android in the smartphone market.
