Bouldering – Sport for everyone! Richard Livsey, December 24, 2023December 24, 2023 Bouldering, the stripped-down cousin of rock climbing, has evolved into a global phenomenon, transcending its humble beginnings to become an Olympic event. No need for ropes or harnesses, just pack climbing shoes and chalk to explore a more dynamic (solo) approach to climbing. Bouldering challenges us to conquer short yet intricate “problems” using a blend of balance, technique, strength, and cerebral prowess. It’s not just a physical adventure; it’s a puzzle that beckons the climber to link mind and body. In climbing “gyms” (I go to the Climbing hangar) each problem is a canvas of colour-coded holds. The challenge unfolds as climbers ascend, using both hands and feet on holds of the same color, concluding their ascent on the very hue they began with. These Colours represent different grades/skill level, making bouldering a sport for all levels. See below for the colour grades for the Climbing Hangar Gym. FYI the colours used for grading do vary depending from gym to gym, if unsure, just ask…..Remember, climbers are a friendly breed. Today, indoor bouldering is one of the most popular adventure sports globally. Remarkably, even in the midst of a pandemic, new climbing gyms, primarily focused on bouldering, have proliferated. This popularity is linked to the collaborative and social nature of bouldering—an activity that brings people together, fostering a sense of community. For first-timers, the aftermath of a bouldering session is often felt in unexpected places. Climbing engages large and small muscles, muscle groups not usually used in every day life and offers both anaerobic and aerobic benefits. I can first hand dispel the myth that body size or type determines climbing prowess. Instead, the importance of technique over pure physicality is essential (an area I certainly struggled to grasp). The art of climbing extends beyond physical strength to mental acuity. Climbers often describe it as “chess with your body,” where strategic moves, balance, and decision-making are paramount. Successful climbers, rather than relying solely on arm strength, emphasize the use of legs, a solid core, and finding the right footholds. I have found Climbing to have a friendly culture, climbers are known for their camaraderie, with many happy to discuss strategies and tips. Unlike some sports, I won’t mention surfing, there’s no territorial dispute over a climbing wall; it’s a shared space for enthusiasts to connect. Inevitably, falls are part of the bouldering experience. Safety, therefore, is a top priority. Guidelines; Checking the landing zone. Going with the fall rather than grasping for holds. Landing on the soles of your feet with bent knees. Relaxing muscles during a fall is crucial, emphasizing that controlled descents contribute to injury prevention. Bouldering is more than a sport; it’s a mental and physical odyssey. It’s a puzzle that challenges both novices and seasoned climbers alike and as you ascend the holds of a bouldering problem, remember that each move is a piece of the puzzle, and the summit is the culmination of your mental and physical prowess.
